Definition - What does Doctor of Naturopathy mean?

A doctor of naturopathy (N.D.) is a medical professional that uses the teachings of natural healing along with mainstream medicine as a combined approach to treat patients. A doctor of naturopathy will use traditional healing practices and principles in a holistic approach in order to prevent and treat various diseases. A doctor of naturopathy can also be referred to as naturopathic physician.

A doctor in naturopathy will base treatment plans in minimizing the risk of harm in patients. Protocols used by a doctor in naturopathy will identify and remove all obstacles to good health, creating an internal and external healing environment.

A doctor in naturopathy may be certified to perform minor surgeries (removing cysts, stitching superficial wounds) but are not certified to perform major surgeries. Currently only 17 states have laws or regulations relating to the licensing requirements of doctors of naturopathy.
